The Ugandan Wildlife Authority manages Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP). It is located in northwestern Uganda, extending inland from the shores of Lake Albert, along the Victoria Nile, and up to the Karuma Falls. The Murchison Falls Conservation Area (MFCA) includes the park, the nearby 748 square kilometres (289 square miles) Bugungu Wildlife Reserve, and the 720 square kilometres (280 square miles) Karuma Wildlife Reserve.
The park covers the Ugandan districts of Buliisa, Nwoya, Kiryandongo, and Masindi. The distance between Masindi, the closest significant town, and the park headquarters at Mubaku is around 72 km. This location is about 283 miles by road north-west of Kampala.
MFCA and the nearby Bugondo Forest Reserve are home to 76 different kinds of animals, including chimpanzees and Uganda’s biggest population of Nile crocodiles. The park is home to 450 recognised bird species, including the not-common shoe-billed stork, diminutive kingfisher, Goliath heron, white-thighed hornbill, and great blue turaco.
In the morning of the first day of your tour, we will pick you up from the busy city of Kampala. A lot of amazing things will happen to you on your trip. The trip to Murchison Falls National Park is just the start. Take some time to enjoy the beautiful scenery and learn from the experienced Access Uganda Safari Guide about the animals that live in Uganda as you cruise northwards towards the park.
When you get there, the Sambya River Lodge is a nice place to spend the night, hidden deep in the jungle along the Sambiya River, which feeds the Nile. It’s quiet, and it’s nice to get away from the noise of everyday life. There are only natural sounds to hear at the camp, so it’s a great spot to read or think. After a good night’s sleep, you’ll be ready to have an exciting experience in Murchison Falls National Park in the days to come.
The sun goes down on Day 2 of your safari, and you should start getting ready for an event-full experience in the park. After breakfast, we shall take a morning game drive to the Nile Delta in search of wildlife and the sounds of the wild.
Many kinds of wildlife put on a stunning show against the rising sun. We shall encounter Uganda kobs, buffalo, elephants, hartbeests, giraffes, oribi, Warthog Patas monkeys, and Abysinian ground hornbills. At the Nile Delta, we could chance upon a lion and a leopard in ambush for animals going to the river.
After a tasty lunch, you’ll be ready for an adventure on a boat cruise on the Mighty Nile to the bottom of the falls. There’s something magical about this boat ride through the water that lets you see the park’s beauty in a new way. We will witness the presence of numerous nile crocodiles, elephants coming to drink, and many water-dwelling birds, like the beautiful saddle-billed stork and the huge Goliath heron. Enjoy the stunning views of the bottom of Murchison Falls.
Today is our last day in the park. After breakfast, we take a relaxed drive to the top of Murchison Falls to see the powerful Nile River. The falls are amazing; the Nile squeezes through a narrow gap in the rocks and falls 43 metres into Lake Albert. The falls were named after Roderick Murchison, the head of a society, by Samuel and Florence Baker, the first Europeans to see them. Ernest Hemingway, a famous writer, had a plane crash nearby in 1954.
