Day 2: Wildlife Encounter at Murchison Falls National Park

Day 2 of our safari trip takes us deep into Murchison Falls National Park. We wake up to the sounds of nature. Starting your day with an exciting morning game drive gives you the chance to see a variety of species of animals, including elephants, buffalo, Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartbeest, oribi, warthogs, and giraffes. Occasionally, lions and leopards can be encountered towards the Nile delta, where they lay ambush for the herbivores going to drink water or wallow in the Nile. The Patas Monkey or Cheetah Monkey is also common during the game drive.

The park is also home to over 600 species of birds, but notable in the savanah are the elegant Ground hornbill and, if you are lucky, the shoebill at the Nile delta Enjoy the sights and sounds of the wild as you walk through the park’s rough terrain with the help of our experienced guides.

The greatest national park in Uganda is Murchison Falls National Park. The area is roughly 3,893 square kilometres in size. The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile for approximately 115 kilometres from east to west.
The park, in conjunction with the Bugungu Wildlife Reserve spanning 748 square kilometres and the Karuma Wildlife Reserve spanning 720 square kilometres, constitutes the Murchison Falls Conservation Area (MFCA).
The park accommodates the Murchison Falls, where the Nile’s waters descend 43 metres after passing through a 7-meter-wide gorge.
Karuma Falls, situated in close proximity to the Masindi-Gulu Highway within the park, is the site of the 600 megawatt Karuma Power Station. When operational around 2024, this facility will become the most substantial in Uganda.
The adjacent Bugondo Forest Reserve and MFCA are home to 76 mammalian species, including chimpanzees, and the largest Nile crocodile population in Uganda. The park is home to an extensive collection of avian species, exceeding 600 in number. Notable species include the saddle-billed stork, African skimmer, Pel’s fishing owl, Abysinnian ground hornbill, shoe-billed stork, and white-fronted chat.
